Medbourne is a small village in Leicestershire which has existed since Roman Times, close to Market Harborough and midway between Uppingham and Melton Mowbray. Despite being small it held a series of race meetings beginning in 1837. The inaugural meeting was staged on Thursday 20th April 1837 on a 1 ½ mile round course on the edge of the village. The first race, the Medbourne Sweepstake, was won by Mr Owsley’s Conservative at the unusual odds of 6/7. Meetings continued for 3 more years, with the final meeting on Thursday 17th September 1840 deemed sufficiently important for the results to be included in Baily’s Racing Register. |
